Professor Hayward has been Dean of the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies since August 2009.

Between 2007 and 2013 Professor Hayward was a member of the Board of Directors of Melbourne Health, the second largest health service in Australia incorporating the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Chaired the Finance Committee. He is a life member of the Victorian Council of Social Service, in recognition of 3 decades of policy advice, education and training for the Victorian not-for-profit sector.
In 2011 Professor Hayward was appointed by the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings, to an Expert Advisory Panel on the Cost of Living. He has been a successful fund-raiser, having secured external support worth over $1m for 2 Chairs and research fellowships in the areas of the Victorian parliament and philanthropy.
In 2014 he was elected as the Chair of RMIT’s Academic Board. The role brings with it a position on University Council and the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive.
Professor Hayward’s research interests are in the fields of urban policy and service provision, with a focus on state governments and housing.
