The newly-established Access to Justice Through Technology Program (AJTTP) promotes the design, development and adoption of technology solutions to improve access to justice.
An exciting new project got underway at RMIT on Tuesday to use design thinking and technology to improve access to justice.
The Access to Justice Through Technology Program (AJTTP) is a partnership involving RMIT University’s Centre for Innovative Justice, Victoria Legal Aid, the community legal sector through the Federation of Community Legal Centres and RMIT University’s Fastrack program. The Fastrack program is supported by Deloitte Digital as well as graduates of the program now working with top-tier companies.
Students from across the university from a range of disciplines are selected to work with mentors from industry and the community legal sector to design and deliver a solution that will improve access to justice in the areas identified (see below). The students work in teams of three, with two teams generally working on the same issue or challenge.
To identify the issues, series of consultations was held with the community legal sector. A workshop was then held to apply design thinking to better understand and define the problem and the nature of the challenge. Design thinking puts the needs of people, the community and/or the ‘end-user’ at the centre of the process. It is unique and fundamental part of the AJTTP.
Three following areas or challenges were identified for this round of the program:
- How do we ensure that we address the critical legal issues of women experiencing family violence?
- How do we make relevant information easy and available for clients and their support workers so that they can deal with their fines more effectively?
- How do we use technology for people with unmanageable debts so that they are able to have their debts resolved and move on with their lives?
The students have been briefed and now the work begins. In partnership with their mentors they have 14 weeks to find and present their solution. The process will change their lives; their solutions will have the potential to change other people’s lives for the better.
