New lanes will enable a see-through and connecting view between Swanston and Bowen Streets
Melbourne’s CBD is a city of laneways and the New Academic Street creates some new ones. Along with the actual new thoroughfare, which runs between Swanston and Bowen Streets, two other main laneways have been created, inspired by the site’s original 1960s’ plans.
These new lanes will enable a see-through and connecting view between Swanston and Bowen Streets. There are also other smaller arcades, running off the lanes with glass-roofed sections, allowing heaps of natural sunlight and fresh air into the heart of the campus.
While creating vistas was key, the main idea driving it was to ‘surgically open up’ a whole group of fairly impenetrable buildings to foot-traffic flow and introduce new uses such as innovative food and beverage along the new corridors.
