Cultures of Sustainability is a transdisciplinary symposium organised by the Art and Sustainability Research Cluster and developed in association with a major international art exhibition at RMIT Gallery, Heat: Art and climate change.

Cultures of Sustainability is a forum for critical reflection on contemporary creative cultural forms of production that address the pressing issues of global environmental change and sustainability. The aim of the symposium is to provide a forum for researchers, artists, designers and writers who work in the field of environment and culture, to come together to discuss the importance of the design of artworks, objects, systems and ideas in generating new knowledge about the social, symbolic and material impacts of climate change.

The symposium will include a keynote address from the eminent international scholar Dr. Wendy Wheeler and presentations from key Australian art and design practitioners, academics and writers.

The symposium is organised in partnership with ASLE-ANZ (Association for the Study of Literature and Environment – Australia New Zealand), and has been generously supported by the School of Art RMIT University, the Design Research Institute RMIT, The RMIT Foundation and the RMIT Gallery.
