International reputation
The School of Art at RMIT University is a leading Australian international art school, fostering a culture premised on global links involving students, artists, writers, academics, communities and arts organizations from around the world, where individuals and groups freely explore and attempt to define new collaborative cultural intersections. A number of international projects ranging from symposiums, to publications, exhibitions, exchanges, residencies, events and community projects are facilitated and organised throughout the year, internationally and within Australia.
The School is connected to a strong academic and cultural network across the world through long-standing international exchange partnerships with other respected universities and cultural institutions. Our current network of academic affiliations spreads from Asia, to North America, Europe, the UK and Scandinavia and is based on partnerships that foster student, staff and artist exchanges and collaborations, and scholarly research.
Maintaining relationships
We are also distinctly focused on the development of perspectives formed through close teaching partnerships within our region. The School academic community works cooperatively with two overseas partners offering a range of shared international teaching programs through the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Hong Kong, and Huadong Shida/East China Normal University in Shanghai. Offshore postgraduate teaching programs are also offered in Auckland, New Zealand.
Additionally, as part of the process of expanding the School of Art in a wider, richer sense within local, national and international cultural communities the School also conducts an annual international Artist In Residence Program—iAIR, supported by open lectures, with tutorials and workshops for students, and with some presentations open and free to the general public. iAIR is supported by international exhibition projects in the School of Art galleries, and in exhibition spaces (or through other forms of public presentation) outside of the University.
Through public and community projects developed and undertaken through the Public Art Programs of the School, strong and lasting relationships have been formed working with local cultural community groups in Australia, and through international community and government partnerships in many other countries.
Within an environment focused on international perspectives, the School of Art community is involved in contributing and interacting at a range of educational, cultural and social levels. The School of Art is historically underpinned by a long-standing project of cooperatively developing an informed and extensive cultural understanding of local and global intersections.
