Special focus areas of practice-based research include ceramics, gold and silversmithing, print media and printmaking processes, and contemporary painting, sculpture and drawing, digital animation and hybrid media, and new technologies of photography, video and sound art.
Theory and history researchers take an active role in the enhancement of research through the rigour of critical thinking and the recognition that art and ideas work in a transitive relationship through creative and scholarly practice.
Theoretical and historical research foci include art and globalisation, art and the academy, art education and cultural policy, contemporary critique of art as a cultural practice, art and psychoanalysis, theories of culture and technology, nineteenth and twentieth century art and ideas, art and identity politics, and philosophies of art, knowledge and subjectivity,

Being part of the RMIT School of Art means they are part of a global outreach with opportunities for international debates and relationships.
Postgraduate research is encouraged in practice-based projects as well as fully theoretical theses. Research and creative practice are of international standard in traditional practices and the latest of technological and cutting-edge contemporary practice.
