Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning
RMIT University recognises the skills and knowledge you have gained through formal and informal education and training, and work or life experience. If you apply and your application is successful, you may reduce your fees and the time taken to complete your program.
The different types of credit and recognition available are:
-
Credit transfer – recognition of previously completed formal training and/or qualifications.
-
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) – recognition of skills and knowledge gained through life and work experiences and through non-accredited training. RPL is assessed and processed in different ways for Higher Education and TAFE. Please select the appropriate link below.
Why apply?
Applying for credit or RPL has several benefits.
-
Learning is not duplicated
As credit and RPL allow you to demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge required for a particular course you can avoid duplicating your learning. This means that you do not have to undertake the same or a similar course again leaving you free to study material that’s new and challenging.
-
Pathways
Credit and RPL allow you to move easily between the TAFE and Higher Education sectors in both directions and increases educational choices and career opportunities.
-
Reduced program length
Gaining credit or RPL can reduce your study load, which may mean you complete your RMIT program in a shorter time frame. For example, if you receive RPL for four courses then instead of taking three years to complete your undergraduate degree it may only take two and a half years.
-
Reduced cost of study
Credit transfer and RPL can reduce the number of courses you need to study at RMIT to obtain your qualification. This can dramatically reduce the cost.
What to consider
Centrelink benefits
If you are receiving a benefit from Centrelink it may be affected if your study load reduces from a full-time to a part-time load. If you think you may be affected you should speak to your school about options for remaining in a full-time study load.
Visa compliance for onshore international students
Onshore international students are required to complete their study within the expected program duration (ESOS Act 2000). You need to be enrolled in a 100% load each semester unless your school has approved a reduced study load. If you are granted a block of exemptions this may change your expected program duration and you will be expected to complete in the revised time frame.
