Find It - frequently asked questions

Find It is a navigational aid provided by RMIT University Library. It helps you find the full text of publications such as journal articles by providing ‘context sensitive’ links between the Library catalogue, journal databases, and full text e-journals and e-books.

Q1. How do I use Find It?

Look for this button: Find It button

When you click on a Find It button, it will open a pop-up window. This will have the Find It menu with links to the full text if available or further information which will help you locate it. Here’s an example:

Q2. Where will I see the Find It button?

  1. RMIT Library Catalogue. If a journal is available electronically, click on the Find It button to see which databases hold full text, and for which years.
  2. Some Library databases. If a Find It button appears in the database you can click on the button to link you to the online full text if available, or help you locate it somewhere else. Click for link to Find It enabled databases
  3. Citation linker. If you already have a citation to a specific article, Find It Citation Linker will link you to the online full text if available, or help you locate it somewhere else.
  4. e-Journal list. This lists the titles of most journals available electronically via RMIT University Library, including their periods of coverage, and provides a useful cross check of the catalogue.

Q3. Who can use Find It?

Anyone can click on a Find It button to discover where an item is available. However due to licensing agreements only current staff and students of RMIT, on and off campus, can access the full text. If you are prompted, enter your NDS login.

Q5. Will Find It help me find articles on my topic?

You will still need to use Library databases to first identify articles on your topic. In many cases the references will include full text or a Find It button to link to the full text.

Q6. How does Find It work?

Find It uses context sensitive linking software called SFX produced by ExLibris. It is based on the OpenURL standard which allows details of the full citation for an article or other item to be embedded in a URL. Find It is updated regularly with details of which journals are available at RMIT and via which databases.

Q7. I can’t see a Find It button. Does that mean you don’t have full text?

Not necessarily! Here are some possibilities:

  • We might hold the item in print. Check the Library catalogue for details. If it is in a journal at a different RMIT campus, you can apply to Document Delivery Services for a cross campus copy
  • The item may be available online via a non-Find It enabled site. Check the journal title in the Library catalogue
  • The database may not be compatible with Find It. Check the journal title in the Library catalogue, Citation Linker or the e-Journal list
  • The database may be compatible with Find It but we have not activated it yet. This is because we are introducing Find It gradually and some databases are more difficult to enable than others. Check the journal title in the Library catalogue, Citation Linker or the e-Journal list
  • There could be a mistake, either in the database, or Find It. Check the Library catalogue, and if you still can’t find it, contact the Library.
  • Remember, even if we don’t hold the item, you may be able to obtain it from another Library or via Document Delivery.

Q8. I clicked the Find It button, and the new window did not appear. Why not?

  • If you are using a "pop-up" blocker (such as the Google toolbar), it may be preventing the Find It menu from appearing. You may wish to temporarily disable the pop-up blocker.
  • The Find It menu may already be open. Toggle through open browser windows until you find one called, "Find It @ RMIT University Library".

Q9. I clicked the Find It button but it just took me to a database screen

Some databases don’t support direct linking to full text. Search for the specific article using the database search screen.
