RMIT University’s Bachelor of Arts (Textile Design) program has been named a finalist in the 2011 Premier's Sustainability Awards.
The awards recognise Victorian businesses and organisations that demonstrate outstanding leadership, creativity and innovation in forging a sustainable Victoria for now and the future.
In the past two years, academics from RMIT’s textile design program in the School of Fashion and Textiles have explored and re-examined textile design practice.
Dr Jenny Underwood, lecturer in Textile Design, said the re-evaluation was part of the Curriculum Change to Embed Sustainability project.
"We placed sustainability as a core principle of textile design," Dr Underwood said.
"The aim is to ensure graduates of the Bachelor of Arts (Textile Design) have the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to practise in a sustainable manner."
Victorian Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, congratulated all finalists on their success and their efforts in forging a more sustainable Victoria.
"Their initiatives demonstrate that our finalists are leaders in their respective industries," Mr Smith said.
"They have taken a creative approach to improving business efficiency while reducing their everyday environmental impact."
Category winners and the recipient of the Premier's Recognition Award will be announced at sustainability's night of nights tomorrow at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
