More than 80 RMIT University students and staff attended the inaugural MBA Student Association professional development event at Campari House on 20 January.
Guest speakers included graduate recruitment specialists Daniel Mullender, Accenture, Geoff Rush and Nicole Frankel, KPMG, Mayling Lum, Ernst & Young and Pete Williams, CEO and Partner of Deloitte Digital.
This innovative and informal gathering provided students with an exclusive insight into what management consultancy firms are looking for when recruiting staff and tips on how to drive a professional career.
Each speaker had five minutes to introduce their firm. This was followed by a facilitated panel discussion where they fielded questions on anything from international student employment opportunities and company training programs to the Global Financial Crisis.
After the official proceedings, the recruiters met students keen for the chance to ask questions and take advantage of some one-on-one networking.
Instant career connections were forged by the more entrepreneurial students, which is something the event organiser, Ryan Stephenson, was very pleased with.
“It was good to see so many students rally behind the MBA Student Association tonight, and the fact that a student was given a business card by KPMG to set up an informal meeting would not have happened without this event.”
Burim Boonwirat, Client Services Advisor for the MBA Programs, RMIT Graduate School of Business and Law, praised MBA SA students for their initiative and encouraged them to keep up the good work.
“It was a very successful event for the first of its kind. We need more students to be proactive in this way and the School is more than happy to support them in such projects.”
The MBA Student Association was launched on 15 October, 2009, at the Graduate School of Business and Law, with the aim to create a more fulfilling experience for all students in the MBA and MBA (Executive) programs.
Marshall Thomson, current MBA (Executive) student and key player in the MBA SA website, said the Association was important because it would improve the standing of RMIT programs.
“The opportunities that the MBA SA provides its members will go a long way in creating and maintaining synergies between RMIT and industry, further strengthening our reputation as an institution.”
