History and Overview of RMIT Business

RMIT Business is well recognised throughout the region as a leader in business education. It comprises six teaching schools and is one of the largest business teaching facilities in Australia enrolling approximately 18,000 students in Australia and South-East Asia. Established in 1944, RMIT Business enrols more students than any other faculty at RMIT University.

The Business Portfolio is multifaceted with an extensive range of bachelor degrees, graduate diplomas, masters degrees by coursework, MBAs and masters and PhD degrees by research available in a wide range of business and management disciplines.

Operating from its central city location in Bourke Street in the heart of Melbourne, RMIT Business is a key part of Melbourne’s business community and is well placed to cater for diverse technical, education and training needs in business. After many years of development in off-shore activity, RMIT Business is one of the most experienced university faculties in international education with activities such as student and staff exchanges, award course offerings and joint research with partners in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, the US, Canada and Europe. All programs offer international perspectives with the Portfolio preparing students to be more pro-active and creative in responding to the challenges of global processes.

The Portfolio’s programs are strongly focused on real-world business issues through an extensive practical applied research program that harnesses the application of concepts to provide solutions to real-life business situations. Currently, more than 300 organisations support RMIT’s Co-operative Education Program with more than 700 students employed in industry as part of their undergraduate study. Industry opportunities are also available in vocational and postgraduate programs.

RMIT Business provides highly qualified research staff, consultancy services to industry and internationally recognised education in research. Students can choose to study a broad range of programs that challenge and encourage them with the skills that will underpin the knowledge economy of the future. The Portfolio also offers a range of learning environments to suit the needs and learning styles of all students.

The Portfolio’s strategic priorities are to:

  • Rationalise, rebuild and refocus our suite of programs to ensure relevance and flexibility of student choice
  • Create an innovative faculty, through research activity and the development of industry partnerships
  • Ensure student-centered approaches to learning and support services
  • Build faculty financial viability and expertise in management of market growth
