Three-year business undergraduate degrees

Flexibility to choose your studies

From 2012 three-year business undergraduate degrees will allow you to specialise within a program or combine specialist skills and interests tailored to your future career. The new structures have been designed in consultation with employers and industry groups to ensure that RMIT business graduates will be equipped with a broad range of skills to work effectively in many careers, anywhere in the world.

Students currently undertaking three year business degrees will transition to the new structure from first semester 2012. On this site you will find transition tables that list the credit arrangements for each course at various stages of your degree.

Students commencing a three year business degree in 2012 will enrol in the new structure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

About the new structure

Why has the structure changed?

Consultations with students, Alumni and employer groups discovered a need for greater flexibility in three year B Bus programs. From 2012, the new program structures will allow you to tailor your studies to better meet the needs of professions and industries, as well as your own personal interest or goals.

What are the most significant changes?

The first significant change relates to the position of common business core courses in the program structure. Seven of the eight common core courses are now placed in Year 1. This will allow us to better integrate these courses with each discipline specialisation or major.

The second change relates to the number of choices provided by flexible courses. Under the new structure, you can choose to further specialise in the program in which you are enrolled or choose up to four general student electives from across the University. Your choice of flexible courses may depend on a number of things, for instance, your interests, your chosen career, or because you wish to gain professional accreditation.

This structural change does not affect existing program titles or program codes.

The BBus generic structure diagram (PDF 1.7Mb) shows how major and minor sequences of courses are grouped into blocks of four or eight courses. Note that it does not represent the actual order or year of study.

What has changed in the B Bus (Accountancy) program?

Under the new structure, 8 flexible courses allow you to:

  • Complete a second major in a business discipline comprising 8 courses (or 96 credit points). The second major will be identified on the transcript of results, or
  • Complete a minor in a business discipline comprising 4 courses (or 48 credit points), and either:
    • A second minor comprising 4 courses (or 48 credit points) chosen from business or another discipline, or
    • Four (4) general student electives.

A list of disciplines and prescribed courses for each available second major and minor is provided the Specialist majors and minors for 3-year B Bus programs (PDF 175Kb)

It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the requirements of this program.

Elements of the new structure

What are the compulsory business common core courses?

You will study the majority of your business common core courses in first year. They are: Business Statistics, Business Computing 1, Introduction to Management, Introductory Accounting, Macroeconomics, Marketing Principles and Prices and Markets. In the second year, you will study the final common core course, Commercial Law.

What is a major?

You are already enrolled in one major, which is commonly referred to as a specialisation. For example, students enrolled in the B Bus (Marketing) are majoring or specialising in Marketing within the Bachelor of Business program.

Flexible courses allow you to further specialise under the new program structure. You can take a second major in a business discipline, which is a sequence of 8 prescribed courses equivalent to 96 credit points. Second majors are available in the following:

Accountancy

Human Resource Management

Business Information Systems

International Business

Economics

Logistics & Supply Chain Management

Entrepreneurship

Management

Finance

Marketing

Note: Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance) students may not select a second major.

If you have satisfied the requirements for a second major it will be identified on your student transcript.

The available majors including courses constituting each major are listed in the Specialist majors and minors for 3-year B Bus programs (PDF 175Kb)

When do I choose a second major?

If you decide to undertake a second business major you will be required to enrol in the first 4 prescribed courses at enrolment for Year 2 and in the remaining 4 courses at enrolment for Year 3. For example, if you choose to undertake a second major in Human Resource Management, you simply select the first 4 courses constituting the major at enrolment for Year 2.

If I complete the requirements for a second major, will it be identified on my transcript?

Yes. If you have satisfied the requirements the second major will be identified on your transcript. The second major will not be shown on you testamur or degree title.

What are flexible courses?

Flexible courses allow you to specialise beyond your chosen major. Your choice of flexible courses may depend on a number of things, for instance, your interests, your chosen career, or because you wish to gain professional accreditation.

Your eight flexible courses can be selected from three options:

  • a second business major (8 courses); or
  • a compulsory business minor (4 courses) + second minor (any discipline); or
  • a compulsory business minor (4 courses) + four electives

What is a minor?

Flexible courses allow you to further specialise under the new program structure. You can take minors in business and in other disciplines. A minor is a sequence of 4 prescribed courses equivalent to 48 credit points, of which one minor must be in a business discipline.

The available minors including courses constituting each minor are listed in the Specialist minors for 3-year B Bus programs (PDF 149Kb)

When do I choose a minor?

Once you have decided on your minor/s, you simply enrol in the prescribed number and sequence of courses to satisfy the academic requirements of your program. You must take at least one (1) business minor in the prescribed sequence. Remember that you also have the option to take four (4) general electives in place of one minor, too.

What is the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) minor?

The WIL minor is made up of 3 courses equivalent to 48 credit points. The WIL minor facilitates the transition from university to the workplace by developing the necessary professional skills. The industry project component allows for hands-on experience under supervision while adding value to an organisation. As an individual or a member of a small team you will be placed within an organisation for two days each week to undertake a business project developed, negotiated and documented by RMIT. Prior to and during this time you will receive training and supervision.

The WIL minor is not equivalent to Co-operative Education.

Can I change minors?

Yes but you must ensure that you satisfy the academic requirements of your program. You must take at least one (1) business minor in the prescribed sequence.

Are there any additional selection or entry requirements for second majors or minors?

There are no additional requirements. The second majors and minors have been put together so that there are no additional selection or entry requirements. The second majors and minors must be taken in the prescribed sequences as many have prerequisites. The exceptions are the language minors, which provide opportunities to begin at various stages based on your level of proficiency.

Can you show me an example of a program structure?

There are many possible combinations of majors, minors and general student electives but a few examples should clarify the new structures and options available to you.

In the following examples (PDF 120Kb), 16 compulsory courses (8 common core plus 8 discipline major courses) of selected B Bus programs are identified. Possible ways in which to package the available 8 flexible courses within the academic requirements of the programs are also presented. Note that all B Bus students must select a business minor in addition to the 16 compulsory courses.

Information for current students

Will there be any information sessions?

Information Sessions for current students will be provided by your School early in Semester 2, 2011.

These sessions will provide detailed information about transitioning into the new program structures. They will also provide you with opportunities to ask questions and seek advice.

Information Session dates will be available on this FAQ and on each School website as soon as they are finalised.

Do I need to retake any courses?

You are not required to retake any courses. Refer to the Credit Arrangements tables presented under “How do I get credit for the courses I have completed?” FAQ.

How do I get credit for the courses I have completed?

The following tables list the credits you will receive for courses no longer be offered from 2012.

Please note that you should seek advice or further clarification from your program director or administrator. Please see the school contact details section.
