Student exchange

Enhance your learning experience

Student exchange allows you to study overseas for the equivalent of one semester or up to one year. As long as you are enrolled as a full-time student, you are eligible to study in another country while only paying your usual RMIT fees. On completion, the study undertaken can be credited towards your RMIT program.

I found that studying abroad really is a gift that you give yourself. Not only was it great for me on an academic level, but I also had an absolutely amazing time being able to travel all over America in my spare time! After returning from what I would call a life changing experience, I am now a stronger and more confident person.

Hannah Chipp, TAFE Public Relations exchange student (Kirkwood) 2009

RMIT has partnership agreements with over 100 international institutions. All RMIT full-time students are eligible to apply to study overseas, and you can still complete your RMIT program in the same amount of time.

Course content and assessment

Partner institutions offer a range of TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in English across a wide number of disciplines.

You will be assessed in accordance with the host institution.

The courses you successfully complete overseas can be credited to your RMIT studies, provided you have sought approval from your home School beforehand.

Eligibility and application

Eligibility

  • You must have completed at least one year of academic study at RMIT at the time of the exchange
  • Some TAFE students may be able to apply after one semester of study, provided they would have completed one year of study at the time the exchange begins
  • You must have an overall grade point average of 2 (credit) or higher
  • You must have approval for your overseas study plan from your home School
  • You must have sufficient funds to finance your exchange.

How to apply

Before you apply, you should do some research on the partner institution you are interested in studying with and attend an information session.

Then you need to get the ball rolling:

Generally the closing dates are:

  • 30 June to go on overseas exchange the following year in semester 1

Closing dates for some exchanges may differ; ask the Education Abroad Office or the staff contact listed in the brochure if in doubt.

Cost

Travel, living and tuition

While on an exchange, you continue to be enrolled as an RMIT student, paying any fees and accruing HECS as usual. You will also need to pay for travel to the destination, accommodation and living costs.

A student exchange can cost from AUD $10,000 - $12,000 per semester depending on the destination. Please note this is an approximate cost only and you should discuss costs with and Education Abroad Office advisor prior to making an application.

Financial assistance

A limited number of Education Abroad scholarships and travel grants are available to help you travel to your chosen study destination overseas.
