Student Profile: Lars Nielsen
Marketing Manager, Werribee Open Range Zoo
![]() Lars moved from Denmark in 2000 to study Public Relations at RMIT University. He gained extensive experience through volunteer work with the Red Cross (which he still does) and started the Bachelor of Business (Marketing) in 2002. During his work placement year he worked at the Melbourne Zoo and in 2005 moved to Werribee Open Range Zoo. “My work placement at the Zoo in 2003 was a great opportunity to expand on everything I learnt at University. I did rely on skills from marketing, business law and statistics. The diverse business understanding provided by my degree was my main asset.” “My current position as Marketing Manager spans activities including developing strategies, creative executions and working with commercial partners, agencies and the media.” “I like the thought of making a difference and as the zoos are not-for-profit there is a certain ‘feel good’ aspect to my work there.” Lars says the work integration and high relevance to real working life were some of the best aspects of the RMIT program. “It is hands-on – not too theoretical and great for someone who can’t wait to get started with their career!”
