Welcome to RMIT, welcome to the Business Portfolio and specifically WELCOME to the Business TAFE School, or what we commonly refer to as the BTS.
Firstly, congratulations on your successful selection into one (or possibly more) of our VET business programs, and we’re very pleased that you have decided to become a part of this University’s community. Vocational Education has a long and proud history within RMIT, indeed 2008 marks it’s 121st anniversary from humble beginnings in 1887 as The Working Men‘s College. Throughout its 121 years, RMIT has built a solid reputation as a leading provider that develops work ready graduates. So you are in the right place to develop your first (or your next) career.
You’re not alone! BTS has approximately 2,600 students here in Melbourne, a small number of students in Victorian regional centres, and there are approximately 1,600 studying our programs in China, Singapore and Indonesia. That’s significant because we are a part of a region that’s continuing to develop as the world’s economic power house. We believe we need to be a part of that, and bring that experience into our program design, because your futures will be strongly influenced by these developments.
You’ll be studying aspects of business with a business School that’s a part of the Education Services sector, and so, it’s appropriate that you can expect the BTS to model best business practice and perform like a business. So I want to make four commitments to you:
Your time with us will require commitment from you too, and I know that by working effectively together we will all have very successful outcomes.
So welcome again, and I’d like to leave you with an observation - life is lived these days at a very fast pace with little time taken to enjoy the experience. University life is more than just a series of courses and study programs; it offers many other enriching experiences. I encourage you to build networks, enjoy the social aspects through social clubs and study groups, be a part of staff /student consultative committees, get involved in volunteer work, and in any other ways, broaden your experience. Just ask. It’s all there waiting for you.
Most importantly enjoy your time here, balance work and play and make it a time to remember. Have a great year.
