RMIT study intensive in France

This elective course is for postgraduate students only. The course will be conducted from Tuesday 3 January 2012 to Wednesday 11 January 2012. Students must be in Grenoble by Tuesday 3 January for orientation and program information. Students must attend all classes unless ill, in which case they must obtain a medical certificate as evidence of their illness. Students cannot leave Grenoble until Wednesday 11 January 2012.

Our partner institution, Grenoble L’Ecole de Management, is one of the leading business schools in France and one of the few business schools (1% of schools worldwide) to possess the three accreditations that distinguish the leading international business schools:

  • EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System)
  • AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and
  • AMBA (The Association of MBAs)

This course for RMIT MBA (Executive) and other postgraduate students has been designed by RMIT Graduate School of Business and Law staff and Grenoble staff. It will be facilitated by Grenoble academic staff in English.

What you will study

Melbourne students will enrol in the course BUSM 2169 European Management

Malaysian students will enrol in the course BUSM 4051 European Management with Malaysian Institute of Management

Online students will enrol in the course OMBA501 European Management with Open Universities Australia

Melbourne students are required to attend two pre-departure workshops to be held on Monday 14 and Monday 28 November 2011. Workshop topics will be outlined during the information sessions. The workshops will assist students to maximize this learning opportunity in Grenoble.

Malaysian students and Open Universities Australia students will be provided with online versions of these classes available on Blackboard.

Assessment

Details of the assessment will be advised at the information sessions to be held on Monday 19 September and Tuesday 27 September (5.30 – 6.30 pm) at the Graduate School of Business and Law, RMIT Building 13 (379 – 405 Russell Street, Melbourne), room 13.03.09.

Where is the course being held?

The study intensive is being facilitated by academics from L’Ecole de Management Grenoble. The Graduate School of Business and Law has established a relationship with this premier business school in France to foster greater cross-cultural linkages between Australian and French MBA students and staff.

RMIT staff will accompany students to France.

How do I meet with the group in Grenoble?
You will need to make your own travel arrangements to arrive at Grenoble. The city is located in the southern French Alps approximately 70km from France’s second largest city, Lyon. Students can choose to either travel:

  • By air:Connections are available from Paris to Lyon or to St Geoirs. Both airports are approximately 45 minutes to one hour from the centre of Grenoble.
    Please note: A taxi from Lyon airport to Grenoble is around 140 Euro (approximately AUD $250).Local buses will most likely be a better option.
  • By train: You can take the TGV (Fast train) from Paris to Grenoble. It is a three hour trip and there are seven trips a day.
    Please note: Students are required to meet RMIT staff in the school on Tuesday 3 January 2012 by1 pm.

How much is the airfare to Grenoble?
RMIT’s preferred carrier, Qantas, has flights to Paris or other European capitals such as Frankfurt and London with connections to Lyon for approximately $2,600 to $3,000. This is just an indicator, more economical fares are available through other carriers.

Do I require travel insurance?
Travel insurance is essential for all students participating in this study intensive. Students will not be allowed to participate in the study intensive without travel insurance.

Students are advised to discuss their individual travel insurance needs with their travel agent at the time of booking flights.

Where willI stay?
To foster a collegial atmosphere, students are advised to stay at one of the RMIT recommended hotels below:

This hotel is five minutes walking distance to Grenoble L’Ecole de Management.

This hotel is 20 minutes walking distance to Grenoble L’Ecole de Management.

Students are to book and pay for their own accommodation.

Can I bring my partner?
Partners are welcome to accompany their spouse/partner.

Are these expenses tax deductible?
Whilst we strongly advise to consult with your financial advisor it is our understanding that for Australian residents undertaking their studies in Australia, who are not using FEE-HELP, the course fee, travel, accommodation, meals and incidentals should be a tax deductible expense. If you are using FEE-HELP, then only the travel related expenses are tax deductible.

Malaysian based students should consult with their own financial advisors and accountants.

Where are classes held?
Classes are held at the Graduate School of Business, L’Ecole de Management Grenoble. All students will be required on the first day (Tuesday 3 January 2012) to meet in the school’s lobby at 1 pm.

Must I attend all classes?

Yes, unless you are unwell. You will be required to notify the RMIT staff member and provide a medical certificate as evidence of your illness.

What resources should I bring with me?

  1. Laptop (not essential, but desirable)*
  2. Writing materials
  3. It is strongly recommended that students download recommended articles and chapters from e-books which are available on the DLS.

* L’Ecole de Management has indicated that RMIT students will be provided with an account to access wireless internet at the Grenoble campus.

What happens after class in the evenings?
Whilst some of the after class time will be dedicated to study and group work, there will be opportunities to explore Grenoble restaurants and the surrounding region. One of the weekend days will be used as a semi-structured business visit.

Weather
January is mid-European winter. Temperatures on average would be between 5 to 12 degrees Celsius in Grenoble. Students are advised to bring suitable clothing, including waterproof snow jackets or coats. It is likely to snow and you will be visiting snow regions as part of your program. If you have access to ski wear, please also bring these items as there will be a day of skiing and rental does not include clothing.

How can I apply?
Complete an RMIT Enrolment Variation Form (PDF 59kb) along with the France study intensive application form (PDF 25kb) and release form (PDF 19kb). All forms must be submitted by Monday 30 September 2011.

What determines if I am offered a place?
Offers will be made to students who satisfy the university criteria which broadly speaking requires students to be making satisfactory progress in their degree. However, students in first year should submit a resume in place of an academic transcript. The Academic Advisors will consider all applications and make offers on the basis of student capability to undertake the course. In the event that the destination is oversubscribed, a grade based criteria may apply. Upon receiving an offer of a place, you will have one week to accept your place in the course.

When will RMIT notify me that I have a place in the study intensive course?
You will be notified by email whether you have been accepted or not. Successful applicants will have their Enrolment Variation Form processed. You are then expected to attend the two pre-departure workshops on Monday 14 and Monday 28 November 2011, 5. 30 – 8.20 pm.
