The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program provides an education that enables students to combine the theory acquired through course work into a practical environment or application, resulting in a greater understanding of the nature of business.
There are many forms of WIL, including Cooperative Education, the Professional Skills Program, industry or workplace experience, industry speakers and projects and simulations.
The School of Management offers work integrated components in the following programs:
Cooperative Education is a compulsory, paid work experience component which is “sandwiched” between periods of study as part of the degree in International Management and Logistics and Supply Chain Management. A full-time student will undertake two years of study, then up to twelve months of discipline related work experience, and then a final year of study.
During the twelve months of work experience, students become full-time employees, entitled to the normal benefits, terms and conditions offered by the employer. This first-hand industry experience provides RMIT graduates with a competitive edge in seeking employment.
Students are ultimately responsible for obtaining a work placement themselves, but may undergo a preparation program to help them in the process. Experience staff can also assist in helping find a suitable work placement.
International Business students are strongly encouraged to obtain work placement overseas or with a firm with an extensive international focus.
Full-time or part-time students who have relevant industry experience are encouraged to seek an exemption for all or part of the Cooperative Education program.
In the Management degree, students will participate in structured work experience either hosted by an external organization or through a simulated case exercise. Work Integrated Learning courses focus on developing skills in a structured learning environment including presenting in a managerial context and exploring personal goals through seminar discussions.
