Live for all to see. The YEP launch night at the Fix Bar was relayed live on the Waterfront City big screen in Docklands.
It takes a lot to impress the style gurus of some of Australia’s leading fashion houses, but RMIT University students did just that recently at Waterfront City’s Docklands funky Fix Bar.
Launching their Young Essentials Project (YEP) designs to a fashion-savvy audience, students studying Textiles, Clothing and Footwear showcased an impressive range of clothing.
On display were items designed for Sportsgirl, Country Road and Calibre that included garments for this year’s New Year’s Eve, sleep and lounge wear, men’s wear for a three-day business trip, a tie that can be worn both socially and at work and a suit collection for the man of today.
Robyn Lyons, YEP Project Manager at RMIT’s Brunswick campus, said the YEP project gave students the opportunity to acquire skills and build their employment capabilities.
“Students receive briefs from the companies and they conduct market research, develop a theme and create a whole range of garments and items.
“The products meet the companies’ requirements and provide an exciting and challenging real work project, as the three companies involved this year have very different needs and demands.
“The launch provided students with a real chance to present and promote their final ranges to the heads of Sportsgirl, Country Road and Calibre, the fashion industry and the general public,” he said.
Student winners for each company’s brief were:
Speaking at the launch, the former Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks, said more people attended the Melbourne Fashion Festival than the AFL Grand Final or the Melbourne Cup combined.
“Melbourne is the fashion capital of Australia and these young designers and their fantastic designs represent this city’s future in fashion on the world stage.”
Other fashion and industry leading lights to attend the launch included Australian fashion legend Joe Saba; Mike Sonand of Pac Brands; Debra Wittner; Murray Chenery, Target Australia’s General Manager Marketing; and Gabby Fleming, Director, Scout Executive Search.
Mr Chenery said he was excited with the level of passion and energy students and teachers had shown for design
“The displays of the students' work were of a very high standard and RMIT should be congratulated on developing our fashion designers of the future."
Ms Fleming said was honoured to be involved in what she considered to be the future of Australia’s fashion industry.
