Invitation

Welcome to the RMIT Centre for Design’s 7th Green Building and Design conference in Melbourne, which will take place on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th September 2009.

The topic for this year’s conference is Green Materials.

The selection of materials in buildings has an impact on the environment, on human health and on construction costs. Regulatory requirements have to be complied with, consumer demand for ‘healthy’ buildings need to be met and liability claims will need to be deflected when choosing products and materials for the built environment. Designers, manufacturers and regulators have been called upon to explore various options for green materials: be it those produced from renewable or recycled materials or be it innovative high-tech products — evaluating the alternatives can be a real challenge for all concerned. This conference will provide practical guidance on how to assess building materials.

The purpose of the event is to transfer knowledge. A cross-disciplinary forum such as this conference, which brings together researchers, owners, AECO professionals and the industry, represents the right education platform. It provides mutual learning by considering different view points, the theoretical and the empirical, research and application, market pragmatism and environmental idealism.

As conference organisers we are also constantly striving to improve our own performance. This has led to the establishment of a virtual participation mode for those who are unable to attend the event personally. This form of attendance has the same validity as a ‘physical’ one (certificates, access to presentation, possibility to ask questions etc.). We believe that this will save carbon emissions and costs while allowing interested parties around Australia to participate in this event. I invite you to organise small internal conferences in front of a big screen and to attend the event online with your peers. We trust you will be informed, encouraged and inspired.

We look forward to meeting you - in person or online - in September.

Best regards
