The University of Melbourne’s (UoM’s) challenge to METIER3 was to create a unique and sustainable teaching environment for its largest, fastest growing school, the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. The task of catering to the Faculty’s 10,500 staff and students, all within a limited building envelope and footprint of 1800m², was matched by the brief to achieve Australia’s first 5 Star Green Star Education (Pilot) rating.

Collaborating with key client and consultant partners, METIER3’s 16-storey, 25,000m² design not only met the UoM’s accommodation requirements, it also set new benchmarks for environmentally sustainable design in education. The $126m building at 198 Berkeley Street, Carlton, Victoria, is Australia’s largest building to be awarded 5 Star Green Star Education (Pilot) rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.

Outstanding building sustainability achievements include reducing external solar heat transfer by 76.5%, energy use by 58%, CO2 emissions by 74%, and water by 83%. Additionally, the innovative design provides an outstanding level of Indoor Environment Quality, achieving 250% above the Building Code of Australia’s required fresh air rates. This entirely low-VOC building reduces potential ‘sick building syndrome’ and has a recyclable modular fit out to meet future reconfiguration needs without disturbing business objectives.
