The international Artist in Residence program—iAIR—began as a structured formal program in the School of Art in 2001. The program was formed to contribute to the School’s international focus, to develop links with innovative cultural networks, and to enhance our contribution to the production of contemporary art discourse. iAIR is global in attitude, action and presence—connecting people through art and generating opportunities for creative experimentation, cross-cultural dialogue and international mobility.

Melbourne campus residencies

Overseas and Australian artists, curators, writers and academics are regularly invited to undertake research in the RMIT School of Art. School studios and research staff host these individuals with the assistance of iAIR, involving them in the School community, supporting their projects, and helping facilitate their stay in Melbourne. In most instances the iAIR program is not available for unsolicited or independent proposals; residents are primarily selected in conjunction with partner organsations and to participate in School research projects.

Overseas residencies for Australian artists

In 2007 initiatives were developed to establish a range of international residency opportunities for Australian-based and RMIT-affiliated artists. These reciprocal residency projects complement iAIR’s Melbourne campus residencies; they are a creative laboratory for cross-cultural exchange and exploration, providing pathways and connections overseas, generating dialogue and fostering an increased mobility for artists.

Printmaking summer residency

During the summer months of December, January and February the RMIT School of Art Galleries and the RMIT School of Art Print Imaging Studio invites seven artists to take part in an annual artist residency program. The artists are provided with 24-hour access to studios, extended access to the printmaking facilities and an exhibition at Project Space/Spare Room. Artists from the residency produce an original edition of 25 prints which are available for purchase from the School of Art Galleries.
