Quality Research

Quality research in the School of Art is disseminated and published through exhibitions, performances, screenings, conferences, refereed journals, books, websites, DVDs, catalogues and special projects. Researchers are invited to exhibit and speak at a range of national and international locations and to undertake international artist in residencies and other research appointments.

Creative project based research is a strength at RMIT School of Art. Special focus areas of practice-based research include ceramics, gold and silversmithing, print media and printmaking processes, and contemporary painting, sculpture and drawing, digital animation and hybrid media, and new technologies of photography, video and sound art.

Theory and history researchers take an active role in the enhancement of research through the rigor of critical thinking and the recognition that art and ideas work in a transitive relationship through creative and scholarly practice.

Theoretical and historical research foci include art and globalisation, art and the academy, art education and cultural policy, contemporary critique of art as a cultural practice, art and psychoanalysis, theories of culture and technology, nineteenth and twentieth century art and ideas, art and identity politics, and philosophies of art, knowledge and subjectivity,

Reputation

The RMIT School of Art has a reputation for high quality and influential research and scholarship in contemporary art. Research is undertaken through practice-led projects informed by theoretical enquiry; it may be interdisciplinary, collaborative or disciplinary and individualistic. Above all, research from the School of Art is contemporary, critically and creatively innovative, and excellently executed.

Positioning in community

Research in the School of Art is characterised by its community responsiveness and global standing. The School of Art has its consolidated research activities in the City Campus, which is in the centre of Melbourne; and its Bundoora Campus where Koori artists research their cultural histories and contemporary practices. Research projects cross national borders and are characterised by their outreach and community connections be they local or global. Research in the School of Art extends out to the community through Public Art projects and Koori art as well as a significant range of exhibitions, performances, presentations and publications.

Advocacy

RMIT School of Art researchers take a leading role in advocacy for the positioning of creative practice as research in Australia and internationally. Academics work closely with university, national, and global organisations to ensure the voice of the creative artist is heard and understood in institutional and government policy and practice.

Mobility of ideas and practice

The School is known locally and globally for the mobility of ideas and practice, exhibitions, performances, screenings, public art projects, and a cutting-edge International Artist in Residency Program which brings leading art researchers to the School, often in association with other host organisations.

The School of Art provides possibilities for academic staff to strengthen their research, to produce effective research outputs, to enhance their reputation and influence in the community and to travel to overseas locations where research projects can be advanced through international collaborations and partnerships.

Research alumni

RMIT School of Art has an impressive array of Alumni who have successfully completed postgraduate research programs. Alumni contribute strategically to a range of cultural fields and practices across the globe. RMIT School of Art graduate researchers continue to be part of shaping the global world of the 21st century.
