Emergency procedures

RMIT has its own Security who are always available and extremely helpful. Security (Building 14, Franklin Street) can be contacted on 9925 3333.

Emergency evacuation procedures are established in Buildings 94,73 and 71 on the City campus and in Buildings 515 and 516 on the Brunswick campus.

If an emergency occurs, follow the directions of staff or, if no staff present, leave the building by the nearest stairwell, and assemble at the designated assembly area.

Standard fire and smoke emergency procedure

1. MOVE anyone at immediate risk from danger to safety. DO NOT USE LIFTS or ESCALATORS.
2. CLOSE the door to isolate the fire.
3. PRESS the nearest RED BREAK GLASS ALARM (if installed).
4. PRESS Evacuate button on ‘EVACPACK’ (if installed).
5. RING Fire Brigade on “000”
6. SUMMON any member of staff to assist in evacuation.
7. ATTACK any fire with the appropriate extinguisher (if trained and safe to do so).
8. EVACUATE to Assembly Area until emergency is over.
