Studios

Use of facilities:

Persons using any facility associated with a School activity must follow protocols. Protocols are intended to provide a safe, comfortable and fully resourced teaching and learning environment for all students and staff.

Failure to observe these protocols may result in disciplinary action and / or exclusion from the teaching programs.

Studio Policy:

  • Studios shall remain locked when not in use and all lights and electrical equipment should be turned off at the conclusion of the last scheduled class.
  • Students must not enter studios unless scheduled for classes. Outside of scheduled classes, studio access is at the discretion of the staff member.
  • It is the responsibility of all staff and students to ensure that the studios are in a clean, safe and operational condition at all times.
  • Drawing board surfaces should not be directly drawn on with any instrument.
  • All drawings should be removed from the boards at the conclusion of the session.
  • Drawing boards should only be cleaned using a damp cloth or with cleaning materials provided by the School.

Please report any damages or losses promptly. Thieves are active on RMIT premises, so be vigilant and don’t leave anything open or unattended for even a minute!

Workshops

The workshops are located in Building 71, 73, 94, 515 and 516. The prime users of these facilities are those persons engaged in the Furniture, Product, Visual Merchandising and Printing based programs.

WORKSHOP POLICY:

When using the Workshops; staff, students and guests of the School shall comply with the following:

Regulations:

  • RMIT Industrial & Intellectual Property Regulations
  • Occupational Health & Safety Regulations
  • Portfolio Student Safety Manual.

Usage and Access:

  • The workshops may only be accessed when scheduled for a class or when official open access time has been allocated on the timetable.
  • No student may use the machine shop unless directly supervised by the lecturer in charge.
  • No work unless part of an academic program or a School activity may be carried out during ordinary operating hours.
  • All students using the workshops must wear appropriate footwear. A tradespersons type boot is the only acceptable type. Steel toecaps are not always necessary.
  • All clothing shall be contained. Loose clothing, shorts or skirts are not permitted. Long sleeves must be worn when welding or cutting metals. Long hair must be tied back, or contained in a hair net or other suitable apparel.
  • Appropriate personal protective clothing shall be worn. Eye and hearing protection must be worn at all times when using machinery and power tools.
  • Full nose and mouth cartridge respirators must be worn when using the spray booth.

Capacity:

  • Furniture: Instruction on the Machines for any furniture program is 1 to 6
  • Furniture: Bench work instruction in the furniture diplomas is 1 to 15
  • Furniture: Bench work instruction in the Pre Apprenticeship Programs is 1 to 10
  • Printing: Capacity in any Printing workshop is 1 to 15
  • Visual Merchandising: Capacity in any Visual Merchandising workshop is 1 to 20

Equipment:

  • When any workshop area, including the spray booth, is left unsupervised the power is to be isolated to that area.
  • Second-hand or ‘re-claimed’ timber is not to be machined using any fixed machinery in the machine room.
  • No person shall operate, set up or otherwise interfere with any equipment or machinery, including spray equipment, until staffed have instructed in its use.

Housekeeping:

  • No bags are to be taken into the machine room or the workbench areas.
  • Project work may only be stored in designated areas and all componentry should be clearly marked with the name of the person working on that project.
  • Metalworking shall be confined to the designated metalworking area.
  • All activities including the use of power tools that generate dust of any kind should be carried out as close as is practicable to dust extraction intakes located in the workshops.
  • Tool cupboards and storage units must not be left unlocked. Staff are responsible for the return of all equipment issued.

Projects and Materials:

  • No material or consumables may be taken from timber racks or stores without the permission of the workshop technician. All material supplied by the School to a student will be documented and an invoice issued by the workshop technician at the time of use.
  • No projects may be removed from the workshop until all money owing has been paid. An official School receipt must be presented before removal. Work not paid for will remain the property of the School. The School may dispose of any work not fully paid for in any way it sees fit in order to recoup any money owing.

The workshop technician may exclude any person who is not equipped for workshop activities (inappropriately dressed), or not scheduled for a class or access, or not behaving safely including not following OH & S principles and policies.

The Computer Laboratory locations for:

Building Design and Technology, Interior Design and Decoration, Furniture Streams
Room 12 on Level 5 in Building 94 and Room 14 on Level 3 in Building 71.

Design, Graphic Art
Rooms 13,17, 21 on Level 3 in Building 515

ICGT - Printing and Graphic Technology Programs
Rooms 6, 12, 18, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28 on Level 2 in Building 515
Room 4 on Level 2 in Building 516

Product Design, Visual Merchandising
Room 33 on Level 5 in Building 94

Computer Laboratory Policy: Regulations:

Usage and Access:

  • School computers may not be used for personal emails or internet access not related to academic research or communications
  • No food or drink may be taken into a studio (except as required for a medical condition).
  • Games and audio discs are not to be played on School computers.
  • No person, unless authorised to do so, may alter, delete, copy or otherwise tamper with hardware
  • and software in the computer laboratory.
  • When discs are provided for storage of work they may not be removed from the laboratory unless authorised to do so.
  • Some Computer Laboratories are equipped with an internal phone to conact the Technical Help Line (open 9.00am to 5.00pm weekdays) on 58888 or Security 53333.

Student use of lap-top computers and CAD software for project work in studio based modules of study.

The School encourages the use of computers by students for project work in studio classes.
