“The footwear production course was recommended to me by friends who had studied the short course previously. After asking a few people in the industry and seeing the workshop on Open Day, it was the obvious choice for someone who wanted to develop skills in a great environment. I found the practical learning of the TAFE environment really refreshing.
The course gave me a great grounding in the art of shoemaking and allowed me to take the plunge into running my own business. I think a lot of people have a romantic view of being a shoemaker but it’s an incredibly exacting task and therefore very time consuming. The upside to all the hard work is you get to work on some really interesting projects – I do everything from custom made high heels and boots to orthopaedic footwear and advanced technology for shoes.
We recently made some vintage replica shoes for a couple of films for actors like Miranda Otto and Judy Davis. We are also working with a local sports technology company, Leuscher Technik, to develop the worlds lightest weight custom designed cycling shoes. Finally, my partner and I have opened ‘A Shop Called Milton’ on Greville Street in Prahran to promote the more bespoke things we are doing – custom shoes and bags as well as leather accessories are all on the way – so stay tuned!”
