Thinking about which electives to choose for 2012?
Consider specialising in Indigenous Studies.
The Indigenous Specialisation is a collection of Indigenous-themed courses which provides students with an understanding of the cultural, historical and contemporary frameworks that have shaped the lives of indigenous people in Australia and globally.
It is an interdisciplinary program which brings together courses on history, cultural diversity, human rights and land management. These, in combination with several fieldwork courses, provide students with the experience and knowledge to work in partnership with indigenous peoples in culturally appropriate ways.
The Specialisation is open to all undergraduate students at RMIT University who have four electives available within their degree Specialisation structure. All students are eligible to undertake one or more of these courses without electing to complete the Indigenous Specialisation.
Participants are required to complete four Indigenous studies electives during their study program in order to receive formal recognition of the Indigenous Specialisation on their academic transcripts.
Undergraduate electives
Postgraduate electives
An appreciation of the socio-economic, cultural and political contexts facing indigenous peoples will enable students to participate in policy debates, program development and community engagement in an informed and culturally sensitive manner.
These electives will enable students to demonstrate an understanding of diversity and its benefit in the global economy, and provide them with the skills to create a human rights culture within their organisations.
The knowledge gained through the Indigenous Specialisation will provide students with a wide range of career opportunities, including in government, non-government organisations, education, natural resource and cultural heritage management, as well as health and community services.
