Lin Shi
Program: Advanced Diploma of Translating and Interpreting, 2006
Profession: Freelance Interpreter
Workplace: Melbourne
“I found that studying translating and interpreting, besides all the academic knowledge and practical communicating skills, was a door to a better understanding of Australian culture and society.”
Career Path
Lin Shi completed her Master of Business Administration at Griffith University in 2005. She quickly realized, however, that without local work experience there were few openings in Management. She also recognised that the lack of a good understanding of Australian culture, lifestyle, or even idiom, can reduce one’s professional opportunities. At this point, Lin Shi decided to investigate the possibility of studying translating and interpreting as a way of gaining that essential knowledge.
The RMIT Difference
Before choosing to do the Advanced Diploma of Translating and Interpreting at RMIT, Lin Shi did her research, comparing RMIT with other institutions which provide similar programs: “I wanted to get the most out of my translating and interpreting studies, and RMIT proved to be the best choice!”
Lin Shi identifies a number of areas which exemplify the excellence of the T & I program:
Current Employment and Job Satisfaction
“By helping people communicate in different languages, I myself can benefit from translating and interpreting, in both work and life.”
Currently Lin Shi works as a freelance interpreter for a number of T & I agencies in Melbourne. She expresses her job satisfaction enthusiastically: “Interpreting may be not the best job in the world, but I love it!”
The Future
Lin Shi’s stated aim is to become an excellent interpreter and to build a fine reputation in the T & I industry.
