Advanced Diploma of Translating and Interpreting graduate profile

Weiyi Li

Program: Advanced Diploma of Translating and Interpreting, 2007
Profession: Freelance Interpreter
Workplace: Melbourne

“I enjoyed every minute of the course at RMIT. Not only because my interpreting and translating skills improved….but also because of the people I met.”

Career Path

Weiyi graduated from the Advanced Diploma of Translating and Interpreting program at RMIT in July 2007. She has been employed since then as a freelance interpreter by various agencies in Melbourne. Her work has taken her into many different settings, including hospitals, legal aid, employment agencies, community meetings and health centres.

The RMIT Difference

The RMIT course proved to be very practical, and Weiyi has been able to apply what she learned on a daily basis in her work.

According to Weiyi, one of the many strengths of the RMIT course was the teaching staff. As practising translators and interpreters their advice and experience were invaluable.

Weiyi also appreciated the support and encouragement of other students – an essential ingredient in maintaining momentum as an international student enrolled in a very demanding course of study.

The Future

Weiyi has high aspirations for her future. She plans to develop greater experience in general areas of the field before selecting an area of specialisation.

“Being an interpreter and translator means you need to keep learning throughout your whole career.”

Ultimately she intends to work as a simultaneous interpreter.
