Professional Recognition

C5291 Diploma of Interpreting

  • This is a national qualification within the Public Sector Training Package. Students who successfully complete all the units with a minimum grade of Competent are eligible to receive the Diploma of Interpreting and students who also achieve a minimum of Competent with Distinction or above in the interpreting unit are eligible to be recommended to NAATI for the paraprofessional interpreter accreditation.

C6111 Advanced Diploma of Interpreting

  • This is a national qualification within the Public Sector Training Package. Students who successfully complete all the units with a minimum grade of Competent are eligible to receive the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting and students who also achieve a minimum of Competent with Distinction or above selected interpreting units are eligible to be recommended to NAATI for the professional interpreter accreditation.

C6109 Advanced Diploma of Translating

  • This is a national qualification within the Public Sector Training Package. Students who successfully complete all the units with a minimum grade of Competent are eligible to receive the Advanced Diploma of Translating and students who also achieve a minimum grade of Competent with Distinction or above in the translating unit are eligible to be recommended to NAATI for the professional translator accreditation in the language direction they studied.

MC167 Master of Social Science (Translating and Interpreting Studies)

  • Students enroll in the Master with exit points at Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma levels. NAATI accreditation as a translator and/or interpreter will only be awarded to students who graduate at the Master level.
  • To be eligible to be recommended to NAATI for the translator and/or interpreter accreditation, students must pass both Translation Accrediting Practice 1 and Translation Accrediting Practice 2 and/or Interpreting Accrediting Practice 1 and Interpreting Accrediting Practice 2 and must achieve a minimum of Distinction in the accrediting courses in Translation Accrediting Practice 2 and/or Interpreting Accrediting Practice 2.


Interpreter training and scholarships

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC), Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC), is offering scholarships to suitable applicants enrolled in the Diploma of Interpreting at RMIT University.

Scholarship recipients will receive $2,000. This amount will cover the cost of course fees for a Government-funded place in the course.

Applications for the 2012 are now open.

The following languages are being targeted in 2012:

  • Dinka
  • Kirundi
  • Nepali
  • Oromo
  • Somali
  • Tedim (Chin)

Applications close 1 December 2011.

Graduates who complete the course with a grade of 70 percent or higher will be eligible for National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) paraprofessional accreditation. OMAC will cover the costs associated with obtaining NAATI accreditation.

To apply for a scholarship, applicants should be fluent in English and one of the languages being offered. Applicants should also be interested in working as an interpreter, be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency. Applicants must also have communications and interpersonal skills and be involved in the community.

The RMIT courses are approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. Students who complete the course with a grade of 70 percent or higher can obtain NAATI paraprofessional accreditation. NAATI is the agency responsible for setting professional standards for interpreting and translating in Australia. NAATI accreditation is the only qualification officially accepted for interpreters.
