Speech by: Thanh-Hung Truong, RMIT Certificate IV Applied Language (Japanese).

The 38th Japanese Language Speech Contest, held on August 4th 2007 at the University of Melbourne, saw the entry of Thanh-Hung Truong, a full-time student in RMIT Full-time Cert IV Applied Language (Japanese). This is the first time a student from RMIT has entered this well-established and challenging contest.

This contest is held annually across Australia. The aim of the contest is to encourage learners who are studying Japanese as a Language other than English (LOTE) and who do not speak Japanese as their first language to practise using their language skills in a challenging context. Winners in the State Division proceed to the National Finals held in Sydney in October 2007.

Hung entered in the Open Beginners Division. This division was created especially for beginner students of Japanese, the main criteria being you must not have completed more than 300 hours of Japanese study nor spent more than 6 months in Japan after 6 years of age. Hung was encouraged cheered on by his RMIT teachers and classmates, delivering a wonderfully written and presented speech. RMIT Language Programs are proud of Hung’s achievement and hope that this will be the beginning of RMIT students of Japanese language entering the Contest annually.
