Welcome to the November edition of the Globalism Research Centre Bulletin.

Our Global Studies seminar series for 2010 concludes this month with Professor Jim Falk presenting Worlds in transition: evolving governance at a time of rapid change, on 10 November at 5.30 pm. The series will return in March 2011.

This is the final Bulletin for 2010. It will return next year to provide all the details of Globalism Research Centre news and events, as well as other events of interest in Melbourne, elsewhere in Australia and overseas in 2011.

Our forests, your pollution: Indonesian environmentalists speak out about Australia's carbon offset schemes

Two climate justice activists from Friends of the Earth Indonesia, Indonesia’s largest and oldest environment organisation, are joined by Muliadi from Central Kalimantan to discuss Australia’s plans for forest offsets in Indonesia.

Human rights and human trafficking

The UN estimates that up to 4 million people are trafficked every year, with violations of human rights being both a cause and a consequence of trafficking. Accordingly, it is essential to place protection of human rights at the centre of measures taken to prevent trafficking.

  • What does a human rights based approach to preventing human trafficking look like?
  • How can civil society play a role in this?

Visions and perspectives: global studies in the 21st century

This inter- and multi-disciplinary conference aims to examine, explore and critically engage with themes and issues related to global studies throughout the world. It will promote the ongoing analysis of creative and critical trends in the field of global studies, as well as alternative cultural and social movements that affect teaching and research in the field. In particular, the conference will encourage theoretical and practical debates about the cultural, social and political contexts within which global studies is flourishing.

Conference languages are Chinese and English.

Call for papers: Proposal (250 words) with a brief CV (250 words) should be submitted electronically to Dr. Xu Lei at and Anna Malavisi by December 20, 2010.
