Re-imagining the Australian Suburb Seminar 2006

The Re-imagining the Australian Suburb Seminar was held at the Melbourne Museum on Tuesday 17^th October.

Over 70 academics, industry and government professionals attended this years’ seminar which featured RMIT University PhD candidates from the School of Social Science and Planning and Civil Engineering, who presented their research and approaches towards the concept of environmental and social sustainability in our urban areas.

The Re-imagining the Australian Suburb project is a result of the collaborative efforts of seven research clusters that focus on separate but highly correlated areas of sustainable urban development.

Re-imagining the Australian Suburb is an umbrella research project which uses a triple helix approach – examining the social, economic and environmental consequences of current housing development and the potential in the future for this to be more sustainable.

The project is a collaborative effort involving the work of research managers, PhD and masters students. We work closely with industry partners to develop information and frameworks that will aid the integration of sustainability into industry processes and policy.

Our researchers examine and review the current methods, thinking and practices that are being used and developed by our local governments, catchment authorities, housing and land developers, builders and planners in order to create more sustainable suburbs. We also look out for gaps in knowledge across the field of sustainable urban development and use our research to bridge these gaps.
