Radical media in focus

Melbourne’s vibrant media community will have a rare opportunity to hear from one of the world’s leading scholars on radical media around the world, Professor John Downing, on Monday 16 April, 2007.

The lecture will be based on material from his classic book Radical Media: Rebellious Communication and Social Movements. It weaves an historical and international tapestry of radical media forms ranging from street theatre, culture-jamming, subversive song, underground radio, performance art, dance, and graffiti to video and the internet.

Founding director of the Global Media Research Center at Southern Illinois University, Profesor Downing specialises in social and cultural theory, and has published extensively on such issues as racism in the media, and the international history of media forms.

John Downing appears at RMIT as part of the RMIT School of Applied Communication’s involvement in the OURMedia VI International Conference being held in Sydney (9-13 April 2007).
