RadioIntroduction (Quicktime video) | FAQ The three year undergraduate major in radio is designed to provide a thorough grounding in all areas of radio production. The theoretical aspects of the course are taught in combination with practical exercises. In the first year students learn research and interview techniques, studio and location recording, editing, mixing and panel operation. Topics include the Vox Pop, the Interview, the Documentary and Feature and Live-to-Air demo production. In second year these skills are extended to the production of more complex radio features, live to air presentation and programming, commercial and promotions production, radio drama and advanced digital recording techniques. At this stage of the course students are also aware of the variety of roles within a radio station, have an understanding of management structures and issues affecting the contemporary industry. An area of development in recent years has been On-line radio services. Students produce material for FM airplay and also the Internet. The Internet provides a platform to showcase the best of student work, providing an archive for a global audience. It also allows students to develop programming models in the emerging field of digital radio. Third year is mainly project based with students working on a range of individual and group assignments. Skills in radio journalism are further developed as a part of the producer’s role and students work on cross media projects involving audio, video and web components, to reflect the requirements of the contemporary media industries and provide a diverse range of graduate employment outcomes. |
