Art History and Theory

Within the School of Art, the study of the Art History and Theory has always had a strong profile, and is recognised as a crucial element in the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) program. Rather than focusing on any single art medium, Art History and Theory provides an interdisciplinary study for students across the School of Art.

All undergraduate and honours students in the School of Art take Art History and Theory as a core discipline which enables students to relate their own studio practice to the wider critical, historical and theoretical context of art and cultural studies. Courses are also offered to students in other schools as university electives in Art History and Theory.

In the School of Art, the study of Art History and Theory is based on the view that art cannot be understood in isolation from its social, historical, and philosophical contexts. Courses in this discipline encourage students to develop well-informed, yet independent judgment, and to explore the connections between contemporary art and the broader historical and theoretical fields. Techniques in writing, the analysis and discussion of critical and theoretical texts, along with a scholarly approach to research are also taught in Art History and Theory.

Staff in this area teach in both on-shore and off-shore programs. At each year level staff deliver formal lectures along with tutorial or seminar discussion groups. Art History and Theory also plays an important role in Postgraduate Studies within the School of Art, offering the specialised study and supervision required by Masters and Doctoral students.

In the on-shore program, First Year Art History and Theory is delivered to all students as a large weekly lecture followed by smaller tutorial groups.

In Second Year all students are able to select from a number of more specialised interdisciplinary courses in semester two.

In Third Year students also select from a number of specialised interdisciplinary courses in semester one.

For students undertaking an Honours year, there is a weekly Honours seminar along with supervision in the student’s own preferred area of research in the discipline.

Staff in Art History and Theory are experienced academics who also publish art criticism and research within the discipline.
