This area celebrates three centuries of photography. Students can engage in a broad range of photographic and digital imaging training and theoretical research. Extensive hi-end digital production facilities coexist with established analogue equipment. Electronic, silver, and non-silver processes supported by advanced colour management practices encourage the development of sophisticated production skills and artistic strategies. New imaging technology is critically engaged and evaluated in the investigation of the conceptual, technical and ideological foundations of the analogue and electronic photographic arts.
Students, staff and graduates continue to make significant contributions to contemporary art and culture. Students have won or been finalists in the Australian Centre of Photography Student of the Year, the Centre for Contemporary Photography Summer Salon, and the McGregor Prize for Photography. Graduates also hold senior national and international university teaching and research positions. Staff have exhibited and undertaken residencies nationally and internationally and are represented in many public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Centre of Creative Photography, USA. They also helped establish the Centre for Contemporary Photography and First Floor Artists and Writers. In the last three years two students have been finalists at the Australian Centre for Photography’s annual Phototechnica award.
