Media Arts courses cover the historical genesis, theoretical basis and practical demands of moving image culture refracted through the lens of contemporary art practice. Courses offer students a range of activities and outcomes including hybrid media and experimental animation; traditional and non-traditional animation techniques; video art; narrative and the moving image; new genres and media art installation; collaborative and inter-disciplinary practices. Courses emphasise a rigorous approach to the relationships between technology, form and content to instil in students an expansive, flexible and rigorous approach to their art practice. Staff and graduates within Media Arts maintain a high profile within the Melbourne art community whilst exhibiting nationally and internationally.
Staff Achievements
During 2004 Ian Haig was on a Australia Council New Media Arts Fellowship in addition to undertaking residencies in Tokyo, Seoul and Los Angeles whilst Martine Corompt and Dominic Redfern have taken part in the Australia Council and Asialink residency programs in France, Thailand and the United States. Media arts staff have been included in exhibitions at The museum of modern art, New York, The Pompidou Centre, Paris, The Tate modern, London and The Australian Centre for the moving image, Melbourne.
Student Achievements
Recent graduates have been commissioned by SBS for the ‘World Tales’ animation series, and recent exhibitions/screenings include The Cannes film festival, The Art Gallery of NSW and recent graduates currently coordinate 'Tape Projects', a video art collective providing opportunities to exhibit work.
