Anti-Consumerism in the Contemporary West

”Anti-consumerism

The Anti-Consumerism in the Contemporary West Project is an Australian Research Council funded investigation of contemporary critiques of Western consumerism.

The Project is being undertaken within the Centre for Applied Social Research in the School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning at RMIT University. The research is also being conducted in collaboration with The Globalism Institute.

Divided into three interconnecting research themes, the project involves;

  • A review of recent media and intellectual commentary on the consequences of overconsumption.
  • A brief documentation of recent ‘anti-consumption’ activism in Europe, North America and Australasia.
  • An Australian-based ethnographic exploration of how people perceive and negotiate material cultures and a contemporary ethos of Western materialism.
