Dr Damian GrenfellResearch Program Manager (Sources of Insecurity) Recent research: social conflict in East Timor, Aceh and Thailand; violence; nationalism; social movements; globalization; global protest movements. The common basis of Damian Grenfell's research is driven by an interest in insurrection, resistance and dissent. In my PhD—'The State and Protest in Contemporary Australia: From Vietnam to S11'—he examined a series of major campaigns over the last forty years in Australia and argued that, notwithstanding both significant continuities and changes, expressions of dissent in Australia have continuously been unable to transform broader social structures despite an often implicit ambition to do so. In recent years, the national focus of this research has been extended so as to consider formations of global resistance, from anti-corporate politics to the development of the World Social Forum. The interest in social movements and resistance politics has provided an impetus for research into forms of nationalist insurrection and post-conflict reconstruction, especially in terms of how we understand the nation-state in a period of intense globalisation. The RMIT-based project Sources of Insecurity provides the basis for this research, with East Timor the major research focus.
Dr Anne McNevinResearch Fellow Recent research: Anne McNevin joined the Globalism Research Centre in 2007. Her research looks at the transformation of citizenship and belonging in the context of neoliberal globalization. A particular focus is how irregular migrants (refugees, asylum seekers, illegal labour migrants and stateless persons) are implicated in the processes through which citizenship and belonging are constructed, policed and contested. She is currently preparing a monograph on these themes. Anne is also working with Professor Paul James on an ARC Discovery project, Irregular migrants and political belonging in global cities. This three-year project involves detailed case studies of belonging/not belonging amongst irregular migrants in Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles and Melbourne. It asks whether new forms of belonging and political agency are emerging in these contexts and how they relate to broader global processes of social and political change. Anne completed her PhD at the Australian National University in 2006, in Politics and International Relations. Prior to joining the Globalism Research Centre she held research positions at the Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights, Deakin University and the Australian Fair Pay Commission.
