How to apply for an RMIT program

Program and Fees for International Students

Before you apply as an international student you need to check the program prerequisites. Credit or advanced standing for past studies may be available. Print out an application form to send to RMIT or apply through a registered representative. Check the progress of your application on the Internet.

Information is available online for international students applying for a fully online program.

Steps in the application process

Step 1: Choose a way to apply

There are two ways to apply:

Closing dates – deadline for applying
There are no specific application closing dates but we advise you to send your application as early as possible as:

  • Some programs meet quotas very quickly.
  • Student visas can take up to 6 months to process if you are from a country assessment level 3, 4 or 5 (pdf).
  • Some programs have special requirements which must be assessed before you application will be processed, for example an interview or portfolio may be required. Check the entrance requirement information in each program for any special requirements.

Step 2: Fill out the application form

You must complete the Application form for admission as an International Student This form can be printed from the Internet or collected from International Services. Use this form to apply for all pre-university, TAFE, bachelor degree and postgraduate programs.

  • Study Abroad students must read How to Apply and complete the RMIT Study Abroad Application Form.
  • Year 12 international students currently studying VCE or IB in Victoria must apply through VTAC for bachelor programs or can apply directly to International Services for TAFE programs. For more information please read Admission Information for International VTAC Applicants
  • Students under 18 years of age must have appropriate guardianship arrangements in place before an eCOE for student visa purposes can be issued. Please refer to the guardianship website for further information.

Advice and assistance

International Services can assist you with your program choices, prerequisites, credit for previous study and the progress of your application. You can contact International Services directly in Melbourne or meet us when we next visit your country.

Many countries have Australian Education International (AEI) that can assist you. AEC offices are associated with Australian diplomatic and trade missions throughout the world. AEI offices cannot process applications.

A network of RMIT registered representatives is available worldwide. They are knowledgeable about the Australian education system, RMIT University and the RMIT application process and can assist you with your queries, applying for programs and your visa. A fee may be charged for this service.

Step 3: Include any required attachments

Check that you meet all prerequisites and include the required attachments before you send your application.

Compulsory attachments:

  • Academic prerequisites: certified academic transcripts
  • Evidence of your English language level (where necessary)
  • Certified graduation certificates (in both original language and in English)

Certified translations must accompany documents that are not in English.
Copies can be certified by:

  • An authorised officer from the institution that originally issued the documents
  • An Australian overseas diplomatic mission or any Australian Education International
  • An Australian Justice of the Peace

A non-refundable application fee payment of Au$70, applies to all new applications except for those listed below:

  • Students who are currently enrolled at RMIT, including students enrolled in offshore programs/articulating programs (e.g. SIM, Metro, BiNus, RUIV and LUCT)
  • REW/ELICOS only applicants (however if a REW student also applies for additional non-English programs, they must pay the Au$70 application fee)
  • VTAC applicants who are applying for VET/undergraduate courses, including those onshore students who apply directly to RMIT for VET courses
  • Research applicants
  • Study Abroad/Exchange applicants
  • Government or privately sponsored students
  • RMIT graduates returning to study
  • Students who are defering for the first time (students who have deferred more than once will be required to pay the application fee)
  • Trinity/Taylors College Foundation Studies students
  • RMIT Vietnam campus students

Attach if applicable:

  • English translations of all documents
  • Folio
  • Syllabus (if applying for advanced standing /course credits)
  • Resumé or curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Research proposal (for master by research and doctoral applicants)
  • Personal statement
  • References from employers
  • Letter from scholarship provider
  • Supplementary Forms

Prerequisites: academic, work and English
Most programs have academic prerequisites that must be met before you can be accepted into a program.
All programs at RMIT University are taught in English so each program has a minimum English entry requirement.
The academic and English requirements are included in the description of each program.
Check the entry requirements for a detailed list of information for each study area.

Advanced standing/ course credits
RMIT’s selection officers will assess your academic results and program syllabus and an indication of advanced standing/credits will be printed in your offer letter.
You must attach the following documents to your application

  • A course syllabus that outlines the content of the courses you have previously completed
  • The results you gained for these subjects

Queries about advanced standing will be answered after we have received your application. Credit will usually be confirmed after you have arrived and enrolled in your program.

Step 4: Send your application to RMIT

Application fee payment

A non-refundable application fee of AU$70 must be submitted with your application. These payment methods are accepted:

  • Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard, Bankcard)
    Complete your details on the print application form.
  • Bank Draft
    Draft should be payable to ‘RMIT University’ in Australian dollars and to an Australian bank. Write your student number (if known) on the back of the draft.
  • Telegraphic transfer
    Transfer to be paid in accordance with the details at the bottom of the application form. A copy of the telegraphic transfer, including your full name and contact details, must be attached to your application form.

Then you can check the progress of your application online.

Step 5: Your application is assessed

Your first preference will be assessed and if this is successful, other preferences will not be assessed. If the first preference is unsuccessful, the second and in turn the third preferences will be assessed.

Changing your program preferences

  • If you decide to change the order of your program preferences you must contact International Services immediately.
  • If you wish to change one or all of the preferences, you must fill out a new application form and send it to International Services. No application fee applies to second applications. The first application will be cancelled by RMIT.


Incomplete applications: application pending
If your application contains insufficient information for full assessment (eg final results are not included) a letter will be sent to you or your RMIT education representative. This will outline the details that must be provided to complete the assessment.

Step 6: You receive a reply from RMIT

Your application will be assessed and you will receive a letter from RMIT telling you the result of your application. You will need to accept your offer as soon as possible.
