Internationalising RMIT’s teaching and learning

Internationalisation of the curriculum is one of three key priorities under the Teaching and Learning Strategy2000-2002.

Under the direction of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) a multi-faceted and multi-layered approach has been adopted. This approach views internationalisation as a way of engaging with the contemporary processes of globalisation, and is located within the general principles of RMIT’s Teaching and Learning Strategy. Internationalisation of the curriculum, a paper by Professor Fazal Rizvi is available for download in PDF format

Historical Development

Internationalisation of the curriculum was first identified as a priority by the University in 1994. The term was used to refer to the internationalisation of teaching and learning and was seen as having two aspects –

  • teaching and learning which incorporates a global, international and multicultural orientation
  • promotion of international and cross cultural understanding and empathy.

A Commonwealth Staff Development Fund grant in 1996-1997 provided significant impetus for the initiation of a number of University wide projects in the areas of curriculum resources and cultural issues. Further information on the development of RMIT’s Teaching and Learning Strategy including reports and papers is available on this website.

Recent Initiatives

Initiatives in 2000 included a series of University wide and School based projects, a lecture series focusing on ‘Information Technology and Internationalising the Curriculum’ and a one day ‘Internationalisation of teaching and learning at RMIT’ symposium

An overview of activities in 2000 and key questions addressed in 2001 are outlined in ‘Innovation and Renewal in Internationalisation of the Curriculum in 2001’.

  • 2000 Lecture Series: Innovation and Renewal in Internationalisation of the Curriculum in 2001

In 2001 a series of lectures addressed the convergence of education, on-line technology and the knowledge economy.
