The Harvard Style is a generic term used for the Author-Date referencing system. There are a number of Harvard Styles, including APA (American Psychological Association) and that outlined in the Style Manual for Authors, Editors and Printers, (published by the Australian Government Publishing Service). The Harvard Style that comes standard with EndNote is faulty, as it does not display journal article titles in the bibliography. To solve this problem you can use the APA Style that comes with the EndNote program or download the Harvard Style 6th edition. Harvard Style 5th edition is also available.
However, it is also useful to have some knowledge of how to make adjustments in the way a particular Style is displaying. You can correct the Harvard Style that comes standard with EndNote by following these steps:
Selecting the Style to Edit
- From the File menu choose Output Styles and the Open Style Manager.
- Scroll through the list, select Harvard and then click the Edit button.
- Before you make any changes select Save As from the File menu and save a version of this style with a different name (eg Harvard Corrected). You will be working on this alternative version leaving the original version still available for re-editing in the future.
Editing the Style
- In the dialog box look at the options on the left and under the Bibliography heading select Templates.
- Select the Journal Article field.
- Place the curser directly after the year brackets and add a space.
- Add inverted commas.
- Click on the Insert Field button and click on Title from the drop down menu.
- Insert a comma and then inverted commas.
- To Save select Save As from the File menu

EndNote allows you to link directly from an EndNote record to the full text of a journal article via the Library’s Find it tool. You must be using EndNote version 7 or later.
- Go to Edit – Preferences – OpenURL
- Check the box to Enable OpenURL
- Change the OpenURL path to: http://findit.lib.rmit.edu.au:9003/sfx_local/
- Delete the existing arguments and replace with: ?sid=Endeavor:CitationServer&aufirst=AUFIRST
&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&atitle=ATITLE&title=TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE &date=DATE&spage=SPAGE&epage=EPAGE (Make sure there are no spaces in the argument). Then click OK.
- Open a full journal article reference
- Go to References – OpenURL link
This will open a Find it screen which will link you to the online full text if available, or help you locate it somewhere else.

Search one Informit database at a time. If you search multiple databases you will not be able to import your references into EndNote. A maximum of 50 references can be downloaded at a time. Save your marked records regularly.
Formatting data:
- Search the chosen Informit database as usual.
- Use the check boxes to mark references.
- Click on Save.
- Under Records to Save, make sure Marked Records is checked.
- Uncheck the Clear Marked Records after Save option.
- Under Label Format, select Short Labels.
- Under Fields to Save, select Complete Record.
- Uncheck the Save Search History under Extra Options.
- If there is a filter available for the database you are searching, select Plain Text as the Output Format. (If there is no special filter for the database you are searching, Select EndNote as the Output Format.)
- Click on Save Records.
You can now use the appropriate Informit filter to import this data into your EndNote library. (If there is no filter for the database you are searching, select EndNote Import as your Import Option in EndNote. Records imported in this way will need considerable editing.)
You have now completed the tutorial.
