Overdue loans and daily fines

To ensure fair access to our resources for all Library users, there are fines for the late return of items. You can help make our borrowing service work well for everyone by returning or renewing items by their due date.

If you do not renew or return the items by their due date…

  1. Your borrowing privileges will be suspended at all RMIT University Library sites
  2. You will be fined $0.50 per item for each day the item is overdue and $5.00 per hour for overdue Reserve material
  3. You will not be able to renew, pick up holds or borrow from our Libraries unless:
  • All overdue items are returned (through the chute at any RMIT University Library site), and cleared from your record.
  • Any RMIT University Library fines accrued that are equal to, or greater than $25.00 (students) and $50 (staff) are paid in full.

Long overdues

If an item becomes more than 69 days overdue we assume you have lost the item and we will therefore charge you a minimum non-refundable $100 replacement processing charge.

Paying your fine

You can pay via EFTPOS or credit card at any RMIT University Library site except Bundoora East. You can also pay at The Hub. Cash is NOT accepted. Please retain your receipt for your own reference.

Note that if you have money in your AMS account, it may be automatically deducted to pay your Library fine(s). Failure to receive notices does not exempt you from fines incurred on overdue material.

Important Please be aware that you will be ineligible to receive official transcripts of results, to enrol in other courses or to graduate until all fines have been paid.

Lost, stolen, never borrowed or damaged library items

Please report any lost, stolen, never borrowed, or damaged items to Library staff. You are liable for the $100 replacement processing charge for any lost or damaged items as well as any overdue fines you have incurred. Replacement copies will not be accepted.

If there are genuine extenuating circumstances, let Library staff know and they will try to help in any way possible.

Claims returned

If you believe you have returned an item, but it is still showing on your library record or you've received an overdue notice for it, please contact the library where you returned the item, or use the online claims returned form so that the problem can be resolved.

If you disagree with the Library fine…

Visit the Loans or Service Desk of the Library where the fine was incurred. We will consider all legitimate concerns about library fines, with the following exceptions:

  • Lack of knowledge of library policy
  • Unwillingness to take responsibility for material loaned to a third party
  • Forgetting the due date
  • Non-receipt of library courtesy notices either via email or in the mail
  • Email in-box was full
  • Unable to visit the library often or distance from the library
  • Disagreement with library fine policy
  • Returning items to non-RMIT University Libraries by mistake
  • Not being on campus
  • Semester breaks, summer vacation, or on placement
  • Changed opening hours
