Title: Network performance analysis

Research projects using OPNET modeller

  1. Voice over IP (VoIP) Quality of Service (QoS) over a Virtual Local Area Network (V-LAN) Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). This research project is considering the application of the E-Model QoS analysis technique to the V-LAN MAN scenario. OPNET Modeller is being used to model the network and provide an environment for simulation and analysis to be carried out.

  2. Voice over IP (VoIP) Quality of Service (QoS) over a Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) network. This research project is considering the VoIP QoS measures that can be applied to a UMTS network. The research is being focused onto 3G and 3.5G networks. The simulation and analysis is being carried out using OPNET Modeller and Matlab.

  3. Network Performance Measures. Network performance modelling is being carried out using OPNET Modeller to determine new techniques for network performance measurement and analysis. Next generation networks are being considered including what will happen as the existing network is redesigned to accommodate more real-time traffic and services and the advent of large volumes of peer-to-peer traffic.

  4. Voice over IP (VoIP) Quality of Service (QoS) over a 4G LTE, UMTS and other hybrid next generation networks using MPLS tunnels as a transport for RTP/RTCP streams. The purpose of the research is to identify QoS and routing approaches for hybrid networks. The simulation and analysis is being carried out using OPNET Modeller and Matlab.

  5. Voice over IP (VoIP) admission control and management using the SIP IMS model within a next generation network. The simulation and analysis is being carried out using OPNET Modeller and Matlab.

The Computer and Network Discipline encompasses the area of network engineering research. If you would like to join this group please contact Dr Mark Gregory.

Courses using OPNET

The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering utilizes Opnet in several courses and as a platform for research analysis to be carried out. The Opnet guru package is used in courses and Opnet Modeller is used by research students. Opnet provides an environment where network management, protocol and traffic modeling analysis can be carried out.
