You are invited to participate in a research study to further develop and validate a short screening tool for depression in a general sample.
Depression is a common mental illness worldwide and in chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. People with depression have an increased risk of developing a chronic illness and those people with depression and a chronic illness are less likely to take medications and have a higher mortality rate. However, despite the debilitating effects of depression, health care professionals fail to recognise depression in half their patients. Psychological scales have been developed to help detect depression in patients with chronic illness; however there is still a need for a quick depression screening tool to use in general medical settings. This current research project aims to further develop and validate a short screening tool for depression in a general sample. The information obtained from the study could be beneficial in the area of assessment of depression in general settings.
