Understanding the family

Currently a major international research project is being undertaken by Professor James Georgas of the University of Athens who is a leading expert in the field of cross-cultural psychology. Professor Georgas is co-ordinating research across 15 nations, looking at the nature of “family”. This project that you are being invited to participate in, is part of this larger research.

This study seeks to explore Australian students’ perceptions of their family structure, amount of family contact, and the perceptions of the roles of immediate and extended family members. The project will look at characteristics such as emotional distance between family members and the degree to which members adhere to certain traditional values.

Research in this area has identified differences between the degree to which younger and older generations maintain traditional family values. This particular study will give further insight into young people’s perceptions of the diverse and changing structure and nature of families in Australia.

If you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to contact Natalie Crawford.
