"to achieve and sustain outstanding scholarship and academic excellence in the geospatial sciences that is recognised internationally".
The geospatial sciences have changed dramatically during the past decade. Principally as a result of a massive increase in industrial research and development, there has been a rapid evolution of technology and this has been widely adopted across all areas of modern society. Today, the geospatial information sciences are one of the world's largest, fastest growing and most influential industries. Enormous and highly rewarding opportunities exist for qualified people in a diverse range of sectors including information technology, knowledge management, land information, sustainable resource management, tourism and transport.
In Australia the geospatial and information science industry is growing at between 15-20% per annum and the market is valued at around $500 million per annum. The market in Victoria is over $100 million. The demand by the IT industry, generally, for skilled individuals outstrips supply by 35,000 people in Australia and over 350,000 in the USA. This demand for talented people is well reflected by the fact that over 95% of the 2005 graduates of the Department of Geospatial Science attracted professional positions within 3 months of leaving RMIT University.
We aim to educate a new generation of leading graduates to support the massive industry growth. This will advance the development of the geospatial science discipline in Australia and internationally and support RMIT University's plan to become a world-class university.
