Laboratory Medicine is the field of study that applies scientific investigation to diagnose, treat or better understand disease processes.
Graduates of the Laboratory Medicine degree
are qualified as Medical Scientists and play a vital role in the health care system. They use diagnostic and experimental procedures on samples such as blood, urine, swabs etc to investigate, identify and treat diseases.
It is estimated that up to 70% of clinical decisions made by doctors are based on the information provided by medical scientists.
Laboratory Medicine at RMIT is the only professionally accredited program in Victoria that prepares graduates for employment as Medical Scientists in all of the major disciplines of laboratory investigation.
RMIT is the only Victorian university which offers disciplines including Haematology, Transfusion and Transplantation Science, Cytopathology, Histopathology and Clinical Biochemistry as major areas of study.
