If you are interested in a career in the health sector, have an eye for detail, enjoy helping others and would like to be involved with direct patient care using a range of high-tech medical imaging equipment, then consider enrolling in one of the Medical Imaging programs at RMIT University.
Both the Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) Medical Imaging stream and the graduate entry coursework Masters in Medical Imaging are applied science programs with a strong work integrated learning focus, giving all students the hands on experience as a Medical Imaging Technologist.
Medical Imaging Technologists, or Radiographers, are health care professionals who assist in the diagnosis and management of patients via the acquisition of medical images through x-rays, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and computed tomography (CT), to create optimal images of a the structure in the body and obtain the data necessary for the diagnosis and management of disease and injury.
Medical Imaging is one of the three streams in the Discipline of Medical Radiations, alongside Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy.
RMIT University has the longest standing medical imaging program in Australia and offers the choice of either an undergraduate degree or a graduate entry coursework masters program, and it is the only undergraduate professionally accredited program in Victoria that can be completed in three years. In addition it is proud to have a record whereby nearly 100 percent of graduates obtain an intern position following graduation.
Most RMIT graduates find employment in Medical Imaging Departments in Public Hospitals, Private Hospitals and Private Radiology practices in both metropolitan and rural settings throughout Victoria, or any state in Australia. However, the RMIT degree provides many other career opportunities in the wider medical radiations industry in Australia or Overseas. RMIT graduates are entitled to possess the Statement of Accreditation issued by the Australian Institute of Radiography which enables graduates to work in NZ, the UK and Canada.
Careers in Medical Imaging can range from clinical diagnostic applications, specialisation in Ultrasound or MRI, education and research, through to equipment development, applications and sales.
As an applied science degree, the medical imaging programs at RMIT have both medical science coursework mixed with 20+ weeks of clinical placement. The Medical Radiations program features courses in anatomy, physiology and imaging pathology, health psychology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, angiography and research. There is also a comprehensive coverage of radiographic procedures with students gaining the hands on experience at RMIT using modern medical imaging equipment and the opportunity to develop skills whilst on clinical placement.
At RMIT we have extensive clinical partnerships across large and small, metropolitan, regional and interstate Medical Imaging sites. Students undertake a number of clinical placements during their studies and these cover the range of departments over approximately 4 placements of 4-6 weeks, providing students with a wide and varied range of clinical experiences.
