Point of care patient testing

The use of Point of Care Patient Testing is rapidly increasing in the health sector. This course will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to undertake diagnostic tests using point of care devices, to assist in patient management within the Australian regulatory framework.
The course is available to:
- RMIT undergraduate and postgraduate students from health and medical sciences degrees (12 credit point elective) looking to broaden their knowledge
- External applicants looking for a professional development opportunity.
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Safely and appropriately collect a range of biological samples including, blood, and urine for analysis.
- Interact with patients with due regard to their personal safety, comfort and wellbeing and consideration of cultural, ethnic and personal privacy issues.
- Articulate the operating principles of the analytical devices.
- Accurately perform test procedures using a variety of analytical devices.
- Validate and confirm the accuracy of test results using quality control and quality assurance techniques.
- Interpret the significance of test results.
- Communicate test results and interpretation where appropriate, to the treating healthcare provider and record in the file.
- Perform all procedures with due regard to regulatory requirements covering: Occupational Health and Safety, privacy, ethical practice, accreditation and International standards of practice.
What is required to complete the course?
- Online study – over one semester period (12 weeks)
- Face-to-face practical training – 7-day practical module with industry participation held at RMIT City campus or assigned venues, including hands-on use of up to date and relevant instrumentation provided by industry
- Participants will be required to complete immunisation and pathology declaration documents including release and indemnity forms
Upon completion of the course, all external participants will be issued with a competency certificate from RMIT and all participants may be eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning to obtain a Certificate III in Pathology.
Prerequisites and assumed knowledge / capabilities
Interested students should have completed at least 2 years of a health-related Bachelor degree. Familiarity with basic pathophysiology of disease such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease is desirable.
